Why do you need a Business Manager?

A Business Manager can be the most influential person in your life. They are the person who will liaise with your manager, liaise with your lawyers and liaise with the record company. They are the people who pull all the strings together and look after your money, your taxes, budget out your tours, deal with withholding tax from overseas countries and ensure that your money is properly looked after and invested. They are the reason that you are in the music business apart from the music. Remember, the music business is a business like any other business. It is there to enable you to earn a living and provide for your future. When you are recording or on tour you are going to be too busy to deal with the day-to-day running of your business and that is the role of a business manager or an accountant. They will ensure that all your money is collected from those far away collection societies that you might not even have heard of. They will ensure that your bills are paid and that all money due to you is properly received and accounted for. Business Managers/Accountants will work either on a percentage or on a time basis. When choosing a Business Manager it is essential that you choose somebody who has the experience that is required of the music industry, understands touring and the most important part – you get on with them on a personal level. It is essential that they know what your financial goals and aims are and that you should be able to communicate with them in order for them to achieve those goals and dreams.
